About him:
Born in Beiping (Beijing) in 1935, Dr Xu was originally from She County, Anhui Province. From 1954 to 1959, he studied archeology in Department of History of Peking University. In 1959, he joined the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1977).
He now is a researcher, member of the Archaeological Expert Group of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, member of the Cultural Relics Protection Planning Group of the Three Gorges Project of the Yangtze River, member of the Cultural Relics Protection Expert Group of the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, and Honorary Council Member of the Chinese Archaeological Society.
He was the former executive deputy director and deputy director of the academic committee of the institute of Archaeology; secretary to the chairman of the National Cultural Heritage Committee; secretary-general of the Chinese Archaeological Society and editor-in-chief of the "Chinese Archaeology Yearbook"; member of the pre-planning expert group of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of the Ministry of Water Resources; leader of the State Council’s Three Gorges Project Cultural Relics Final Inspection Expert Group. He also participated in the "National Cultural Relics Protection Law".
Dr Xu has long been engaged in field investigation, excavation and research work. His main research fields are Neolithic Culture, Bronze Culture, Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection in Han and Tang Dynasties.
His main works are: Participated in the compilation of the volume of "Archaeological Discoveries and Research in New China" and "Encyclopedia of China•Archaeology"; his monographs include "Chifeng Yaowang Temple, Xiajiadian Trial Excavation Report", "Dadianzi-Xiajiadian Lower Cultural Sites and Graveyard Excavation Report", "Jade Soul Country Spirit III", "Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties Culture", "Civilization That Never Died-Records on the Rescue of Cultural Relics in the Three Gorges Project, Report on the Planning of Cultural Relics and Historic Sites in the Submerged and Relocated Areas of the Yangtze Three Gorges Project, Complete Collection of Chinese Unearthed Murals, Preservation of Cultural Relics in the Three Gorges, Footprints on Ruins-Xu Guangji Collection of Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection, etc.
Dr Xu also won the Third China Government Publishing Award, the National Social Science Fund Outstanding Achievement Award, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award, the Chinese Science Press Outstanding Author Award, the Press and Publication Administration "Encyclopedia of China" publishing honor certificate, Chongqing City Advanced individuals of the People's Government of the Three Gorges Project.
